Glimmer of Hope

He begged
He pleaded
“I can’t breathe” —he said
But it was all for naught
A few minutes later, he was no longer with us
His life stolen away in the blink of an eye
For no reason other than the colour of his skin

And in the face of cold-blooded murder, no arrests had been made
The system was not built to help him

So

The people wiped their tears
Turned their grief, sadness and fear into bravery
And took to the streets
Held up their signs
And fought the best way they knew how
For all the black lives lost before
All the beatings, shootings, abuse, discrimination, hatred
They called out his name, at the top of their lungs
They were angry, frustrated, fed up
Nothing should be left standing if they weren’t allowed to
So they set fire to buildings
They broke windows
They revolted
And rightly so
They were angry
They were disgusted
The system was not built to help him or them

And

The reporters reported
Some of their messages truthful and righteous
Some of them quite distorted
Many of their stories staged and misleading
But no one cared, they wouldn’t stand this loss
So the buildings burned, and the protests did not stop because they had robbed us for far too long
Those who couldn’t protest physically
Took to social media
And they tweeted till their fingers went numb
They recorded videos and podcasts
They tried to educate
They encouraged people to vote

They were mourning
We all were

But we were fighting, the best way we knew how because the system was not built to help us

Some people wrote
Some people taught
Some people sang
Some people prayed for healing

In all of this, while we did so, somewhere amidst the chaos

She wept
Her son was gone… her baby
She wept
Because he didn’t deserve it
She wept because he did nothing wrong
She wept, because she wondered if there was something more she could’ve done
She wept because his life was brutally snatched away without a second thought
She wept because the system was not built to help him, to help her
She wept because her baby was gone.

We didn’t know him, most of us had never met him or seen him before
But we wept
with all the mothers who have lost their babies in this barbaric way
with his family, and his friends and for the loss of another black life
for all the others that had gone before

We couldn’t bear it anymore, so we wept for every single black life that shouldn’t have been lost

Although we wept
Although we were mourning and many felt broken and uneasy

Somewhere amongst the burning cars and broken hearts…

There was a glimmer of hope in the distance
It felt almost unreachable
Like a single candle in the corner of a cold dark room
But it would get brighter and bigger, I could feel it
I could tell because of the way we wouldn’t let this one pass…not this time
The way we wouldn’t hold back

It was coming, we could feel it
The moment they would finally hear us
Because we would make them…
When it wouldn’t all be for naught
When we would remind them that before their falsified history books, we were the original kings and queens
When we would rebuild the system to help US
